Dr. Shaffer teaches courses in Early American History, including Colonial America, The Age of the American Revolution and United States, 1789-1860. He also teaches the American history survey class and the occasional graduate seminar in American History before 1900. Dr. Shaffer has been an active partner in the two Teaching American History grants received by the Region XVI Education Service Center in Amarillo.
Dr. Shaffer's research involves 19th century southern newspapers and their role in shaping political affairs in the south and the nation. He is especially interested in The Richmond Enquirer, which was edited for forty-one years by Thomas Ritchie. Dr. Shaffer recently published an historiographical essay on Jacksonian politics in a book entitled The Age of Andrew Jackson.
Dr. Shaffer enjoys reading fiction, playing golf and watching baseball. He is married and has a daughter.
