Melody Aye Loya, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Social Work

Dr. Loya joined the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work in 2000. She received a B.S. in social work (BSW) from West Texas A&M University in 1993, a M.S. in social work (MSSW) from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1997 and a Ph.D. in human services from Capella University in 2006.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Loya teaches across the social work program curriculum offering both traditional face-to-face courses and has developed several online courses. She has several online courses offered through Education on Demand. She is currently the MSSW Program Director.
Along with other social work faculty, Dr. Loya provides oversight at West Texas Family and Community Services, a project of West Texas A&M University. The project is housed in Amarillo at 601 W. 10th. Through this agency, social work students participate in hands-on learning, providing case management and conducting psycho-educational groups. The agency is currently developing a truancy-reduction program, having piloted it in the spring of 2014.
Dr. Loya leads short-term study abroad programs to Costa Rica, and is currently developing programs to other Latin American countries.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Loya's research interests include immigration, cultural sensitivity, and study abroad programs.
Personal Sketch Dr. Loya lives in Amarillo with her husband and two cats and enjoys traveling as much as possible. She has two daughters and six grandchildren. Her current hobby is trying to learn Spanish!
