Professional Profile

Dr. Felina Franklin joined the College of Education and Social Sciences in 2018. She received a B.S.W. from Buffalo State College (State University of New York) in 2006. She earned her M.S.W. (2008) and Ph.D. (2012) in social work from the University of Houston.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Franklin teaches bachelor and master level social work classes.

Dr. Franklin completed her dissertation entitled Identifying the Legacy in Patients with Co-occurring Disorders and Examining Changes in Life Satisfaction and Self-efficacy.

Dr. Franklin has over 10 years of clinical social work experience and is a licensed clinical social worker-supervisor (LCSW-S). She began providing direct services to persons suffering from co-occurring mental health disorders, one being chemical dependency, in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. She was promoted to Program Director of the outpatient partial hospital program (PHP), providing supervision to over 50 therapists and supportive staff.

Dr. Franklin has worked in the medical hospital as a Palliative Care Team Social Worker providing counseling and support to patients and families regarding goals of care discussions and end of life issues. She has also worked as a Medical Social Worker conducting assessments and providing discharge planning services to patients and families.

Research and Creative Activity

Dr. Franklin’s research interests include legacy work with those suffering from chemical dependency and the elderly living in assisted living facilities/nursing homes. She is interested in partnering foster care youth with elderly persons living in assisted living facilities/nursing homes and examining the effects of life skills training/mentoring on youth and elders.

Personal Sketch

Dr. Franklin was born in Fairfield, TX. Her family relocated to Amarillo, TX when she was a few months old. She was raised by her single mother, is a second generation college student and third generation American born Mexican-American. She graduated from Highland Park High School in Amarillo, TX, and then attended her first year of college at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX. She was then married to Philip Franklin and they moved to his home town of Buffalo, NY.. She now has two boys, Luke (7 years) and Logan (7 months), and enjoys spending time outside with her two sons, husband and dog Sasha (6 year old female). In 2018, she relocated back to Amarillo to be closer to family and pursue teaching
