Professional Profile

Dr. Helbert joined the Department of English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages in 2017. Before that, he read for his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia and his M.A. at Virginia Tech. His B.A. is from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Helbert teaches literature, especially of the early British variety. Some of his absolute favorite texts to teach, in no particular order, are: Beowulf, Culhwch ac Olwen, Dante’s Divina Commedia, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, anything by Christine de Pizan, and Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur

Research and Creative Activity

Dr. Helbert is a medievalist and his current research project centers around King Arthur in English, Latin, Welsh, and Anglo-Norman French literatures of Britain. He also publishes on modern constructions of the Middle Ages (“medievalism”) and Environmental Humanities.

He has published in Arthuriana, The Journal of English and Germanic Philology, and Studies in Medievalism among other venues.
