Welcome to the 71th annual Band Camp at West Texas A&M University.
A&M
Here are some before pictures. We're assembling packets for Sunday's registrations.
Let's start with.....the gang. Kaitlyn, Braden, and Zoe. Gage took the picture.
Closeups!
This is Northen Hall atrium, looking west. Music shares the building with the art department (or it could be the other way around) and dance, so the atrium is a gallery.
This is the northwest side of Northen. You will come through this entrance to start the registration process.
If you swivel your body to the right, you'll see the entrance to the west addition to Northen. Inside are percusssion practice rooms, the large ensemble rehearsal space, instrument storage, and two decent-sized rehearsal rooms.
Now we're inside the west addition and there's a surprised Kaitlyn.
Same view without Kaitlyn.
The large ensemble room.
Inside Northen is the recital hall. It's dark inside. And here's an early example of my work. Strain your eyes.
We're back outside. Northen atrium is on the left and the west addition is on the right. During camp, Northen is the "N" building.
Left face! Now you are seeing the Fine Arts Complex. This is the "F" building.
This the view from the south side. We're on the north side of campus, so most of the buildings are south and east.
Inside the Fine Arts Complex, center of the first floor, facing east.
On the east side of the Fine Arts Complex are three performance areas: southernmost is the School of Music's recital hall (110 seats), in the middle is the Branding Iron Theatre (350 seats; where the Saturday conerts will be performed for half of the camp; and northernmost is the Happy State Bank Studio Theatre.
A tree. South side of the FAC.
Turn around and you are facing south and looking at the Bookstore that is within the Classroom Center, which is a four-story banana-shaped building.
Close to the Bookstore is the Gold Card Office. The band camp card can be loaded for vending machines, etc. The university is cashless, so the card is like a debit card.
The Starbucks in the food court.
Chick-fil-A and Which Wich.
Jarrett Hall is where the male campers will stay.
Across the street from Jarrett is the dining hall. Meals are included in the cost for residential campers; commuters can use their band camp ID as a debit card.
Further south is Centennial Hall, northwest entrance, and this is where the female campers will stay.
Zigzagging back toward Jarrett but listing to the east is the Virgil Hensen Activities Center (VHAC). We will have morning classes in there, and it will be open for recreation in the evening. More later.
The marching band field at the north end of campus. We're watching the temperature. If it's too hot, we will move the 1:45 pm class into the VHAC.
Friday, July 5. Two days before camp. I told you that Mary Moody Northen Hall houses the art department on the north side, music on the south, and two dance studios and a dance office also on the south. Here is some of the art that's on display while you are waiting for camp to start.
Some of the drawings are animal parts. They're probably instructions for assembly. [I hope it's not the opposite!!!] I make up my own titles, so here is "Bear Parts."
[We rescued the poor things that were attached to the wall.]
"Dog Parts"
This is a huge installation in the stairwell on the northwest side of the building.
A three-part assemblage in an alcove on the second floor near the elevator.
Another installation on the southwest stairwell.
Jean Miro-like art. [I don't know what the assignments was and I'm not an artist, but I am a guesser.]
Here's a different series. I'll try to get more information for you on my trip downstairs.
Here are some 3-D paper works.
Some graphic design work.
This is where you will pick up your registration packet on Sunday. They'll pass out the stuff by last name, so when you come to camp, try to remember what letter of the alphabet your last name starts with. Write it down or take a picture of the letter with your phone.
Saturday, July 6, one day before camp. Today the dorm supervisors and the resident assistants come for their training before camp. (And, may I say, that we do a very thogough job to take care of your children while they are on campus living in the resident halls!) We hire our graduates, the dorm supervisors, and senior music majors, the RAs, for our camp.
At 9 pm, we had the band camp faculty meeting
End of Sunday.
