WTAMU Continuing Ed Pharmacy Tech Course Begins Jan. 28
CANYON, Texas—The Office of Continuing Education at West Texas A&M University, in conjunction with National Collegiate Partners (NCP), is offering a Pharmacy Technician Training course beginning Jan. 28 at WTAMU.
The 14-week course is tailored to fit busy family and work schedules and designed to prepare students with both theoretical and practical training through hands-on experience. The classes will prepare students for entry-level jobs as a pharmacy technician in retail and institutional settings. Those who complete the rigorous course will know how to prepare prescription orders under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and how to perform all duties required in any pharmacy setting. Students also will be prepared to take the certification exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
The classes will meet Monday and Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. beginning Jan. 28 through May 9. Once the 84 hours of classroom study is completed, students will begin the 120-clock-hour internship in a local pharmacy to gain hands-on experience. Certificates of completion will be distributed after completion of the internship.
According to the United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, job opportunities for pharmacy technicians should increase as the number of older people using prescription drugs continues to grow. Over the next seven years, employment in the field is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, an estimated 32 percent by 2020.
Enrollment for the program is limited, and admission is based on application and interview. The fee for those who register early is $4,295 and includes materials and textbooks. Early registration ends Jan. 18 after which the fee increases to $4,495. NCP offers financial aid options for those who qualify. For information about financial aid, visit ncpcareerservices.com.
