Department of Art, Theatre and Dance

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)/Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree

Requirements

Refer to the “Requirements for Baccalaureate Degrees” section of the catalog.

General Information for Art Students

  • Outside work is required in all studio classes. The Department of Art, Theatre and Dance reserves the right, with permission of the student, to retain class work for instructional purposes and for a permanent collection of student work.
  • Foundation studio core referred to in some prerequisite consists of ARTS 1316, 1317, 1311, 1312, 1303 and 1304.
  • Courses for non-art majors requiring no prerequisite consist of ARTS 1372, 1373, 1374, 3372, 3373, 3374, 4370 and 4371.
  • ARTS 1372, 1373, 1374, 3372, 3373 and 3374 provide non-art background studio experiences in drawing, oil painting, watercolor painting, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, glass blowing, graphic design and computer art.

NOTE: Students will be required to purchase all paints, brushes, rulers, paper, canvases, and necessary tools and supplies for all art courses.

University Core Curriculum Requirements

Refer to the “University Core Curriculum” section of the catalog.

NOTE: Art majors (B.A. or B.S. degree) are not required to hang a senior exhibit; however, with departmental approval, the student may elect to have a one-person or group show. If the student decides to show, guidelines given for studio major exhibits will be followed. A critique is optional.

Art Core Requirements

NOTE: Art majors (B.A. or B.S.) interested in gallery management, museum work or other art/business possibilities should normally select Option I or III and take support courses in ACCT 2301, 2302, BUSI 1301, MKT 3340, MGT 3330, 3332 (18 semester hours).

Option I

  • Foundation: ARTS 1316, 1317, 1311, 1312, 1303, 1304.
  • 12 semester hours selected from ARTS 2323, 2316 or 2366, 2333, 2326, 2341, 2375, 2377 and 2313.
  • 12 semester hours selected from ARTS 3372, 3373, 3374, 4370, 4371.

Option II

  • ARTS 1316, 1311, 1312, 1304, 2346, 2316 or 2366, 3373, 3374, 3381, 4381.
  • Six semester hours selected from ARTS 3372, 3373, 3374.

Option III

  • ARTS 1303, 1304, 4370.
  • Six semester hours of ARTS 4370.
  • Nine semester hours of ARTS 4371.
  • Six semester hours of studio art.
  • 12 semester hours of art electives.

Art Honors Requirements

  • ARTS 4394 and six hours from ENGL 3342, HIST 3332 or 3336, MCOM 4306, THRE 4361 or 4362.
