WTAMU Student Takes First Place at National Singing Competition
CANYON, Texas—With his rendition of der Erlkönig, West Texas A&M University student Antonio Charles won first place in the Advanced Men’s/Graduate School Level competition at the National Association of Teachers of Singing conference July 6-7 in Boston.
Charles, a senior music and business finance major from Pataskala, Ohio, earned the right to compete at the final level after creating YouTube videos of six songs in four languages for the first round of competition. His videos earned the baritone a place in the semi-final round, where the top three singers in each category advanced to the finals. Charles, who took the first-place prize in the final round, studies voice with Dr. Joe Ella Cansler, associate professor of music, Dr. Robert Hansen, director of the WTAMU School of Music, and Mary Jane Johnson of Amarillo College. He was awarded a certificate and a $2,000 cash prize.
