WTAMU Student Lands NPR Internship
CANYON, Texas—Krystina Martinez, a senior mass communication/broadcasting major at West Texas A&M University, has been selected for a post-graduate internship with NPR’s Weekend Edition in Washington, D.C.
Weekend Edition Saturday and Weekend Edition Sunday are NPR’s weekend morning news programs, and Martinez will spend 16 weeks from January to April working for both of them. NPR internships are highly competitive and are offered only three times a year. The winter/spring internship comes with a $5,500 stipend.
“This is an incredible honor for Krystina, and it will provide an immeasurable boost for her career in journalism,” Dr. Butler Cain, assistant professor in the Department of Communication, said. “NPR is one of the world’s most respected journalism organizations, and Krystina will learn much from this experience.”
Last spring Martinez was one of 20 students from across the country chosen to the Online News Association 12 Student Newsroom. She helped provide coverage of the organization’s September conference and awards banquet. She also has served as editor of the University’s student newspaper, The Prairie, for the fall 2012 semester and will graduate Dec. 14. She served as the paper’s assistant editor during the 2011-2012 academic year.
