Board of Regents Approves Mallard as Dean at WTAMU

CANYON, Texas—The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents today approved the appointment of Dr. Jessica Mallard as the dean of West Texas A&M University’s Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities during its regular board meeting Nov. 1-2 at Texas A&M University—Kingsville.

Dr. Jessica MallardMallard, a professor of speech communication, has served as the interim dean of the college since September 2011. She joined the WTAMU faculty in 2002 and previously served as the director of the University’s Attebury Honors Program. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and her master’s degree and Ph.D. from Penn State University.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Mallard named as dean of the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities,” Dr. Wade Shaffer, interim provost/vice president for academic affairs, said. “She is dedicated and well respected, and her energy and leadership will continue to benefit not only the college, but also the students, faculty and staff.”

In other business, the board of regents also approved the acceptance and placement of a new sculpture on the WTAMU campus. The sculpture, “Back from the Brink,” will be placed on Terrill Lawn, between Cornette Library and Buff Hall. It is the creation of Veryl Goodnight and depicts Mary Ann “Molly” Goodnight bottle feeding buffalo calves. The Colorado sculptor’s works can be seen in museums and public collections around the world. Her largest work, “The Day the Wall Came Down,” stands at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University.
