Guaranteed Tuition

Financing a college education can be a challenge for many families, but officials at West Texas A&M University have a plan that will ease those budget woes while offering a built-in incentive for students to finish their degrees on time.

WTAMU has implemented a guaranteed tuition plan that, depending on the number of semester hours earned, locks in a tuition rate for the rest of a student’s education as long as that student graduates on time. And knowing that locked-in rate offers students and parents an amazing tool in planning for college. Families can plan with confidence on yearly college expenses knowing that tuition paid the first year will remain the same through the senior year. Plus, the guaranteed tuition plan is an incentive for students to graduate on time to save money.

Current students, graduate students, transfer students as well as out-of-state and border students get the same tuition perk, too. Incoming freshman will be on the four-year plan while others, depending on the number of credit hours earned, will be on either the three-year plan (30-59 hours), two-year plan (60-89 hours) or one-year plan (more than 89 hours). Locked-in rates for the 2016-2017 academic year will be based on a 2.2 percent inflation rate—one of the lowest in the state compared to other universities—and will be guaranteed for a specified number of concurrent months based on the student's classification status.

Optional Guaranteed Tuition

Beginning Fall 2016, all new undergraduate students have the choice to lock in a guaranteed tuition rate as per the terms above, or to opt out and be billed at a 1 year rate each academic year. By opting out, students agree to a 1 year rate, subject to change each year. West Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M System cannot project cost of attendance for students on a 1 year rate beyond the current academic year.

New undergraduate students will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions giving them information on activating their student account. The first time the student logs in; they will have to choose guaranteed tuition or to opt out of guaranteed tuition. The student must make their choice before their student account will be activated. Once the choice is locked in, the student cannot change their tuition and fee billing choice at any time while they are enrolled at West Texas A&M University.

Please see Tuition and Fees for detailed information on mandatory tuition and fees.

Non-Resident, Border State and Non-Resident, Out of State State Students

Designated tuition, (tuition set by West Texas A&M University) varies slightly between Border State and Out of State rates. These rates are listed on the tables below.

The Tech.54.0601 waiver is given to both non-resident, border state, and non-resident, out of state students their first semester. However, an undergraduate student who drops below a cumulative 2.0 in their chosen program will no longer be eligible for the waiver. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 to maintain eligibility for the waiver. Students who fall below the minimum requirement will be notified by the Office of the Registrar, and will be billed at amounts given on the rate tables, (white column on rate tables below).

Non-Resident, International Students

All students who are not residents of the United States of America are billed at the Non-Resident, International student rates. International students from countries with a tax treaty with the US may file a W-8 BEN for tax treaty benefits through the Accounting and Business Office with the help of the International Student Office.

Determining Your Appropriate Rate Table

2014-2015 Students
Senior and Graduate students who began coursework in any semester between Fall 2014 and Summer 2 2015 are guaranteed two long semesters, and if the student chooses to enroll in them, two intersessions and two summer semesters within 12 consecutive months at the rates found on the 2014-2015.

Senior and Graduate students who started Fall 2014/Spring 2015 and have taken two long semesters between Fall 2014 and Fall 2015, have exhausted their two guaranteed semesters within 12 consecutive months, and will then use the next 1 year guaranteed rate offered, (at this time 2016/2017 Fall Spring). This rate expired at the conclusion of Spring 2016.

Senior and Graduate students who started coursework between May 2015 and Summer 2 2015 are still eligible for two long semesters within 12 consecutive months at the 2014-2015 guaranteed rates, with the last eligible semester ending in Summer 2, 2016. This rate will expire at the conclusion of Spring 2017.

Juniors who started between Fall 2014 and Summer 2 2015 are guaranteed four long semesters within 24 consecutive months at the 2014-2015 rates.

Sophomores started between Fall 2014 and Summer 2 2015 are guaranteed six long semesters within 36 consecutive months at the 2014-2015 rates.

Freshman started between Fall 2014 and Summer 2 2015 are guaranteed eight long semesters within 48 consecutive months at the 2014-2015 rates.
