Professional Profile

Dr. Monroe joined the College of Education and Social Sciences in 1997.  She received a B.S. in vocational education and social studies in 1963 and a M.S. in early childhood and educational psychology in 1968 from the University of Nebraska. She received her Ph.D. in language and literacy with minors in anthropology and American Indian studies from the University of Arizona in 1988.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Monroe teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in Reading and Early Childhood (online and campus-based).

She has served as Program Coordinator for the Graduate Reading Program since 1997-2009; she also coordinates reading and early childhood education courses at the undergraduate level.  

Dr. Monroe was inducted into the Academy for Educator Development, Texas A&M System, in 2000.  She is a member of International Reading Association (IRA), National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC).  

Research and Creative Activity

Dr. Monroe's research interests include literacy images in children's literature, multicultural children's literature, and southwestern images in literature.  She has published in a wide variety of peer-reviewed state, national and international journals; and numerous articles have been included as reprints in Dushkin/McGraw Hill Annual Editions of Multicultural Education and Teaching English as Second Language.  She has presented at national conferences of IRA and NAEYC; and was a presenter at Oxford University, England, Early Childhood Round Table in 2004 and 2006.
