WTAMU Social Work Club Kicks Off 20th Annual Gift-Giving Project

CANYON, Texas—The Social Work Club at West Texas A&M University hopes students, staff, faculty and the community will join its annual “Lighting Up Lives” project to make Christmas brighter for 89 people this holiday season.

This year marks the group’s 20th year of providing holiday cheer through the gift-giving project, and club members hope to fulfill each of the 268 gift requests. Trees, located in Old Main and the Student Success Center, are decorated with specially-marked tags. Each tag provides information about the gift request as well as instructions and deadlines for returning the wrapped presents. Requests range from blankets and gowns to CDs and perfume sets.

Recipients of the gifts are clients of the Department of Aging and Disability Services. Dr. Melody Loya, assistant professor of social work and Social Work Club adviser, said many of the recipients are adults with developmental disabilities who have aged out of foster care and live in group homes or elderly clients living in nursing homes. The club has received three gift requests from each of the 89 recipients, and gifts collected through the “Lighting Up Lives” project will be the only presents some of these people will receive.

Stop by Old Main or the Student Success Center and join WTAMU’s Social Work Club in this gift-giving project. For more information or to make a donation, call Loya at 806-651-2594 or email mloya@wtamu.edu.
