WTAMU Livestock Team Finishes Eighth at National Contest

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s livestock judging team finished eighth overall at the 107th National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest at the North American International Livestock Exposition Nov. 13 in Louisville, Ky.

The WTAMU team earned a total of 4,589 points to finish as one of the overall top 10 teams with a second in performance cattle, fifth in cattle, eighth in swine and eighth in reasons. First-place honors went to Oklahoma State with 4,704 points, followed by Colorado State in second place with 4,695 points and Western Illinois placed third with 4,687 points. Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University rounded out the top five. A total of 33 teams representing agricultural colleges from across the country competed at this year’s event.

In individual placements, WTAMU’s Karl Miller, a senior animal science major from Prophetstown, Ill., was 18th overall with a 12th in beef and 13th in swine. Jeff Long, senior animal science major from Vernal, Utah, earned eighth in beef, and teammate Taylor Eurich, a senior animal science major from Keenesburg, Colo., was 21st in beef.

The contest marked the team’s final competition of the fall semester. The team finished the season in the top five in three of the national contests and always in the top 10 at any national event. Marcus Arnold, a Ph.D. student at WTAMU, is the team coach.
