Grand Opening Planned for WTAMU Reading Room

CANYON, Texas—Award-winning children’s author Kimberly Willis Holt will be the featured speaker when West Texas A&M University celebrates the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its Williams Children’s Literature Collection and Reading Room at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in Old Main, Room 214.

The Willams Children’s Literature Collection and Reading Room was established in 2011 by Rob and Judy Williams, instructor of education and director of the collection and reading room. The Reading Room, located in Old Main, Room 214, houses a collection of contemporary and historical children’s and adolescent literature with an emphasis on national and international award-winning selections. It is designed to provide an environment for individual and group study of children’s literature and research in the field of literacy.

Holt’s keynote presentation for the grand opening will set the tone for future events in the Williams Reading Room. The University plans to host a Lecture Series in Literacy each year with celebrated children’s authors and illustrators as keynote speakers to give area educators, librarians and parents an opportunity to experience the Williams Children’s Literature Collection and Reading Room.

Holt began focusing on a writing career in 1994, and she now has 17 books to her credit. The author lives in Amarillo but has strong ties to Louisiana, where her parents grew up. She uses many of her childhood memories and experiences from visits there as the background for her books. Holt’s books have appeared on best-books lists and earned awards and honors including a National Book Award for When Zachary Beaver Came to Town. Her book, Skinny Brown Dog was a nominee for the E.B. White Read Aloud Award and Keeper of the Night was named a Parent’s Choice Gold Award Winner.
