WTAMU College of Business Announces New Professorships and Appointments

CANYON, Texas—The College of Business at West Texas A&M University is pleased to announce the establishment of the Donald W. Hodges Professorship of Corporate Governance, the Neil and Anne Macy Terry Professorship of Business and the Gene Edwards Professorship of Corporate Governance. A new appointment also has been made in the J. Pat Hickman Professorship of Marketing.

WTAMU professors holding endowed chairs or professorships as well as the donors of those endowments will be honored at a special convocation and reception from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the Recital Hall of the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex.

The Donald W. Hodges Professorship of Corporate Governance was established by Don and Freddie Hodges and Hodges Capital Management in 2013. The professorship was created to enhance high quality instruction and research in the areas of corporate governance and business ethics at West Texas A&M University. Dr. James Owens, professor of finance, has been named the Hodges Professor of Corporate Governance. Owens earned his doctorate from Harvard University and joined the faculty at WTAMU in 1978. He teaches in the areas of corporate finance, corporate governance and bank management. His research has appeared in numerous journals, including Journal of Business & Economics Research, Journal of Finance and Accountancy, Southwestern Economic Review and Journal of Business Case Studies.

The Terry Professorship of Business was established in 2013 by Drs. Neil and Anne Macy Terry.  The professorship was created to support continuous improvement efforts that advance the business program at West Texas A&M University. Dr. Jeffry Babb, assistant professor of computer information systems, has been named the Terry Professor of Business. Babb earned his doctoral degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and joined WTAMU in 2009. Babb teaches in the areas of web development, software development and video game design. His research has appeared in numerous journals, which includes Journal of International Business, Journal of Research in Business Information Systems, Journal of Information Systems Applied Research and Information Systems Education Journal.

The Edwards Professorship was established in 2013 by friends of Gene Edwards to provide an endowment for funding the Edwards Professorship of Financial Planning. The professorship is in honor of Gene Edwards, a distinguished Texas banker who enhanced both business and community development through his leadership at the First National Bank of Amarillo. Dr. De’Arno De’Armond, assistant professor of finance, has been named the Edwards Professor of Financial Planning. De’Armond earned his doctorate from Texas Tech University and joined WTAMU’s faculty in 2003.  De’Armond teaches in the areas of financial planning, risk management and sales management. His research highlights includes publications in Journal of Retail Analytics, Academy of Accounting and Financial Studies Journal, Journal of Behavioral Studies in Business and Journal of Academy of Business and Economics.

Dr. Nick Gerlich, professor of marketing, has been named the J. Pat Hickman Professor of Marketing. Gerlich earned his doctoral degree from Indiana University and joined West Texas A&M University in 1989. Gerlich teaches in the fields of marketing research, e-commerce and marketing theory. His research highlights includes publications in Journal of Management and Marketing Research, International Journal of Internet Commerce, Christian Business Academy Review and Journal of Instructional Pedagogies.  The Hickman Professorship was established in 2008 by Happy State Bank to provide an endowment for funding the Hickman Professorship of Marketing. The professorship is in honor of J. Pat Hickman, a Texas Panhandle banker who provides leadership to Happy State Bank with a spirited entrepreneurial vision. 

The announcement of the new professorship appointments brings the total to 13 endowed professorships in the College of Business. The continuing professor appointments are:
•     Dr. Pradeep Racherla—Gene Edwards Professor of Banking;
•     Dr. Anne Macy—Gene Edwards Professor of Finance;
•     Dr. Musa Jafar—Dr. Phil Gensler Professor of Computer Information Systems;
•     Dr. Darlene Pulliam—James and Mogie McCray Professor of Business;
•     Jean Walker—Dr. Jerry Miller Professor of Entrepreneurship;
•     Dr. Sean Humpherys—T. Boone Pickens Professor of Business;
•     Dr. Jonathan Shaffer—T. Boone Pickens Professor of Management;
•     Dr. Karyn Friske—Stanley Schaeffer Professor of Business Ethics; and
•     Dr. Andrew Li—Don Williams Professor of Management.
