WTAMU Math Lab to Host Tutor-a-Thon

CANYON, Texas—Staff members have set a goal of 300 swipes when the first-ever Math Lab Tutor-a-Thon kicks off Nov.12-15 at West Texas A&M University.

WTAMU students, faculty and staff and community members are invited to participate in the event by making a flat donation or a per swipe pledge. Pledges can be as low as one cent per swipe. Students utilizing the Math Lab during the week will swipe their Buff I.D. card, and swipes will be counted at the end of the weeklong Tutor-a-Thon.

The Math Lab, located in Classroom Center, Room 411, will be open its regular hours—8:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday—during the Tutor-a-Thon.

“WT students can help us by letting us help them with their math class,” Kim Seward, instructor of math and director of the math labs, said. “ The more swipes we have, the more money we will raise.

“The Tutor-a-Thon will help us raise additional funds for tutor salaries, supplies and motivational and promotional items for the Math Lab and Virtual Math Lab. Plus, students using the Math Lab during the Tutor-a-Thon can win prizes, too.”

The University’s Department of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics is home to the Math Lab and Virtual Math Lab, and both have helped many students on campus and around the world tackle the world of math. The Virtual Math Lab (VML) receives millions of page views each year, and the on-site Math Lab logs thousands of sign-ins from WTAMU students using the free resource. Student staff in the Math Lab and VML primarily consists of mathematics, engineering and computer science majors. They help future professionals in such areas as engineering, medical, environmental science, agriculture business, computers and more fine tune their math skills. The Math Lab is part of the Gateway Project, winner of the 2012 THECB Star Award.
