Buff Allies Brings Safe Zone Training to WTAMU

CANYON, Texas—Buff Allies, a faculty and staff gay-straight alliance at West Texas A&M University, is hosting a Safe Zone training from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex, Room 176 for faculty, staff and student leaders.

Buff Allies is a group of faculty, staff and students committed to creating a safe space for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students at WTAMU. Allies are identifiable by the Buff Allies sticker located at their work spaces.

“Students who need someone to talk to but aren’t sure where they can turn are encouraged to seek out an ally,” Dr. Kris Drumheller, associate professor of communication, said.

Buff Allies invited Safe Zone trainers from Texas Christian University to conduct a train-the-trainer workshop in June. Trained faculty and students will be leading the October training. Allies who have received Safe Zone training will have the “Safe Zone” designation on their stickers. All allies have pledged to create safe spaces for diverse students on the WTAMU campus.

“The Safe Zone training is a great platform for providing additional information for supporting our students, identifying community resources and understanding the challenges our LGBTQ students face,” Dr. Yvette Castillo, assistant professor of counselor education, said.

Buff Allies also work closely with Spectrum, the gay-straight alliance student organization. Castillo and Drumheller are advisers of Spectrum and coordinators of Buff Allies.
