WTAMU Broadcasting Program Wins National Awards

CANYON, Texas—The broadcasting program at West Texas A&M University brought home several top awards from the Annual National Broadcasting Society (NBS) Student Electronic Media Competition March 20-24 in Washington, D.C.

The University’s NBS chapter was named a Model Chapter of the Year, and the group also brought home awards for two pieces of student production work, two individual awards, a top faculty member recognition and one honor society induction.

Faculty recognition went to Randy Ray, director of broadcast engineering and instructor in the Department of Communication, who was named Professional Member of the Year.

Filiberto “JR” Alvarado, a junior mass communication major from Anna, won Rookie of the Year. Classmate Lance Wells, a senior mass communication major from Borger, won in the category of audio studio or live performance segment for his piece, “Can’t Deny The Blues by Blues Boy Willy’s Band.”

Amber Moore, a senior mass communication major from Longview, won for the best video comedy program, “The Locker Room.” Other students involved in the production included Koehler Wendt, a junior mass communication major from Chandler, Ariz., Travis Lubbe, a senior mass communication major from De Soto, Seph Stiles, a junior mass communication major from Winona, Chris Jesko, a mass communication major from Hereford, and Miguel Benavides, a junior mass communication major from Dumas.

Mari Samarripas, a senior mass communication major from Ralls, was inducted into the AERho honor society, and Rebekah Purl, senior mass communication major from Sunray, was named an honorable mention AERho Member of the Year. AERho members must maintain a 3.25 or higher GPA and have completed at least three semesters of full-time college work in a broadcasting program.
