WTAMU Horse Judging Team Takes Second Win of Season

CANYON, Texas—The West Texas A&M University horse judging team posted a first-place overall win at the Spring Contest April 18 in Whitesboro. The win marks the team’s second win of the season after taking the top berth at the North American Colleges Teacher of Agriculture Judging Competition earlier this month.

The team won first place with 2,231 points, taking first overall, first in halter, second in performance and second in reasons. Colorado State University tallied 2,207 points to take second and Middle Tennessee State University earned 2,201 points for the third-place berth. California Polytechnic State (2,186) and Kansas State University (2,182) rounded out the top five teams. A total of 86 contestants representing 14 teams competed at the event.

In individual placings, team member Caitlin Robb, a junior agricultural media and communication major from New Windsor, Ill., placed first overall with a first in performance, second in reasons and fourth in halter. Teammate Marilyn Brandt, a junior equine industry and business major from Andover, Ill., placed fifth overall with a first in reasons and first in halter. Kayla Bridgman, a junior equine industry and business major, placed seventh in halter.

“I know the students are excited for the success they have had this spring and the progress they have made so far,” Dr. John Pipkin, director of the equine industry program and coach of the horse judging team, said. “Winning two of two contests this spring is terrific and an indication of the team’s potential. It’s a great start, however there is a lot of work to be done this summer and fall for everyone to reach their full potential and have the success they want this fall at the really meaningful contests of the year.”
