WTAMU Receives College Access Challenge Grant

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s Mobile Go Center will be on the road in 2013 promoting the Generation Texas campaign thanks to a $50,000 College Access Challenge Grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The University will work in partnership on the project with the Texas Panhandle P-16 Council and the Partners for Postsecondary Success to use the grant funds to promote the Generation Texas campaign. Generation Texas is a statewide campaign promoting college access for everyone, and WTAMU’s Mobile Go Center will provide key information about higher education as it travels across the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.

“The Mobile Go Center offers unique opportunities for the people of the Panhandle,” Julie Arias, director of University Outreach, said. “We’re excited about getting the Go Center out there, and this grant will let us do that.”

WTAMU’s Mobile Go Center is equipped with 16 laptop computers, a satellite for Internet connection and work stations stocked with college planning materials. The trailer is wheelchair accessible and is fully heated and air conditioned. The 42-foot trailer offers a comfortable setting for students and parents to ask questions and get help in the sometimes confusing process of college preparation as far as admissions, financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

In addition to the Mobile Go Center’s travel, other key elements of the grant include initiating a social media campaign with area high school students, distribution of Generation Texas campaign materials such as flyers, T-shirts and bracelets and the scheduling of events for further information about financial aid and college admissions. The University’s Collegiate G Force mentors also will be on hand to work with area students about the many opportunities available in higher education.

WTAMU’s College Access Challenge Grant will serve an estimated 20,000 students.
