Faculty Ombuds Officer Homepage

Welcome to the Faculty Ombuds Officer Homepage. I would like to tell you about the role of the Faculty Ombuds Officer on our campus. This position was created through a cooperative effort between the Faculty Senate and the Office of the President. This position follows the standards of practice of the International Ombudsman Association. These standards are described in these ethics:

Independence
The Faculty Ombuds Officer is independent in structure, function, and appearance of the highest degree possible within the University.

Neutrality and Impartiality
The Faculty Ombuds Officer as a designated neutral, remains unaligned and impartial. The Faculty Ombuds Officer does not engage in any situation which could create a conflict of interest.

Confidentiality
The Faculty Ombuds Officer holds all communications with those seeking assistance in strict confidence, and does not disclose confidential communications unless given written permission to do so. The only exceptions to this privilege of confidentiality is where there are allegations of discrimination, sexual harassment, related retaliation of sexual violence, fraud, and/or imminent risk of serious harm.

Informality
The Faculty Ombuds Officer, as an informal resource, does not participate in any formal adjudicative or administrative procedure related to concerns brought to her/his attention.

After researching the background for this job position, and interviewing a number of individuals serving in this position at other universities, I have determined that my job is to provide a confidential place for faculty and Professional Librarians to collaboratively explore complaints, clarify issues, and consider options. To assist me in this role, I have joined the International Ombudsman Association. In this role I will listen and work with you to find informal solutions. I am looking forward to working with all faculty and the Professional Librarians in this capacity. Please feel free to contact me. Since this is a new job on our campus, I have created a sheet of frequently asked questions to assist us in learning what I can and cannot do.
