WTAMU Livestock Team Closes Season with Win at NACTA

CANYON, Texas—The West Texas A&M University livestock judging team closed out its season with a first-place overall finish at the 2013 North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Competition Thursday, April 4 in Lubbock.

The WTAMU team placed first in all areas of competition—beef cattle, sheep and goat, swine and reasons to take the first-place win with 4,402 points. Northwest Missouri State earned 4,036 points to take second place followed by Sam Houston State University in third place.

In individual standings team member Rhet Long, earned a second place overall after placing first in sheep/goat and swine and second in beef cattle and reasons. J.W. Clark placed fifth overall, and Kaycee Carpenter finished in sixth place overall. Others finishing in the top 10 were Brady Boyd, eighth overall, and Jessie McClellan, 10th overall.

“The Department of Agricultural Sciences is extremely proud the accomplishments of the 2013 WTAMU Livestock Judging Team,” Kevin Williams, assistant professor of agriculture education, said. “Since early December this group of six students has put in countless hours practicing and honing their skills.” They have competed in competitions at Denver, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston and Lubbock with much success.”
